Home at Last
We have started the process of domestic infant adoption, and are excited to bring a new life into our family. We're working with an agency that is helping us navigate all that goes into this process. As of July 2018 we are in the Home Study phase, meaning the agency is evaluating us to make sure we're safe and stable– this involves background checks, in-depth interviews, and a LOT of paperwork. They are also helping us learn about adoption as we take a slightly different path to parenthood than we originally thought. Once the home study is approved, it's a waiting game until we are "matched" with an expectant mom who chooses us to parent her baby (and we choose her as well). That part could take anywhere from a few days to over a year.
As part of this process, we have started a crowdfunding campaign. It may surprise you to learn that adoption-related costs can easily add up to $35,000 or more. The financial burden created by these costs can be overwhelming for hopeful adoptive parents. We personally are looking at a total of around $25,000 in agency fees alone. This is why we have set a goal of $20,000 to help lighten the load.
Over the course of our marriage (13 years!) we have been greatly blessed by a loving, supportive community of family and friends in a variety of locations spanning the US and Canada, and even beyond. We've felt your love even more as we walked through infertility and loss over the past several years. By simply loving us, you are already a big part of what we feel we bring to the table as hopeful adoptive parents. We know our future child(ren) will be greatly loved, and blessed to have you all in their life. You do not NEED to do anything more!
But somehow, the amazing and loving people around us seem to WANT to do more to help us grow our family. So if you feel led to give, we will humbly accept. 🙂 We have already been blessed by some generous folks, and it seems right to open up the opportunity for others who may want to help in this way.
Whether you give in this way or not, we ask that you would PRAY for us- for wisdom, strength, patience, peace of mind and heart, and for financial provision.
Please pray for the baby who will (hopefully) join our family, and for their first parents and family members. We pray that they will also be blessed with peace, wisdom, and strength for their own journey.
We invite you to follow along here on AdoptTogether, and also on Kristen’s blog, deepdelightfullife.com. Feel free to reach out and check up on us, too; we'd be happy to hear from you.
Our adoption just got updated to Home at Last by Kristen Henry
If you hadn't heard yet, we are so excited to share with you that we have been placed with a sweet baby girl, Joanna Ember Rose, born on November 8.
After over a month in the NICU in Sioux Falls, Joanna was eating and gaining weight well enough to come HOME, so on December 11 we drove back to Sioux City as a family of three. We're settling in nicely, and Joanna is happy and growing.
We felt SO cared for and secure when our agency's placement fee came due. Between your support here and a generous grant from the Show Hope Foundation, that fee was totally covered. We plan to use the remainder of our AdoptTogether funds for the legal fees associated with adoption finalization this spring. Since some have asked to be updated about those fees when they come due, we will update here if there is a need to raise more funds.
Saying THANK YOU doesn't seem like enough for your support; you have helped remove a huge obstacle on our path to adoption, a path that led us to the most precious little girl and a "bonus" (birth) family who is wonderful beyond our wildest dreams. We are so blessed to have you in our lives!!!

Home Study Approved! by Kristen Henry
We are excited to share that at the end of September our home study was completed and approved by our agency, Bethany Christian Services.
The next step is to finish our family profile– the photo book about us that will be shown to expectant parents who are considering placing their child for adoption with a waiting family. As the agency begins working with expectant moms (and sometimes dads), they send out some basic info to waiting families like us, and we respond if we want our profile shown to the expectant parent(s). We haven't had any opportunities come through since our home study was approved, so the waiting game has truly begun!
The approved home study also makes us eligible to apply for grants, and we are already working on some applications.
We are SO grateful to all of you for your prayers and financial support. Before the home study was even complete, we knew we would be able to pay the fee. What a feeling of PEACE you have given us with your support. THANK YOU doesn't even begin to cover it!
We will still need to come up with a little over $12,000 to cover the post-placement agency and legal fees, but we hope that amount will decrease if we are approved for some grants. Thank you for following along and for supporting us!
