My name is Kat and my husband’s name is Josh. We tried for years to have a baby, but we couldn’t. We did foster care for a few years, loving on littles and hoping to adopt one or more of them someday.
In 2018 we were no longer fostering, and God told us to say YES to my cousin when she called to ask me to take in her 11 year old daughter. We were obedient and 2 days later, we had our girl. I don’t want to get into the reasons she came to us, only that she needed us and we agreed to help. She did not come to us via foster or kinship care. This was a parent dropping off their child to live with someone she didn’t know. We had to go to court to get guardianship so we could enroll her in school and get health insurance for her. We had a lot of help doing that via a gofundme that my mother started to help with legal fees.
This little girl is now almost 14 years old. She is our joy. We are her family. It’s time to give her our last name. We've recently had a hiccup in the adoption process. Our daughter’s biological mother is no longer answering any contact we have attempted.
This of course will not only make the adoption process take longer, but also cost substantially more.
