We are so excited to share the news that we are prospective adoptive parents. We also want to make space and sit with all the emotions that can be experienced by everyone in the adoption constellation which includes adoptees and birth families. As we started looking into adoption, we found stories from adoptees and birth families that countered what we thought we knew. Sometimes we felt uncomfortable. And there were times when we questioned ourselves and our intentions. But in learning more and talking with adoptees we have come to where we are at right now: if we’re going to adopt, we want to be able to tell our children and their birth families that we did everything we could to ensure their rights were upheld first and foremost.
This means that we had to find an adoption agency that supported access to ALL reproductive choices (including abortion and families staying together), honored first families and adoptees first and foremost, financially supported birth mothers regardless of placement, only offered open adoption as an option (which means that adoptees have access to their birth records and family history) and was free of religious affiliation. It seemed like we would be looking for a needle in a haystack. But little did we know that an agency that met every one of our requirements was right here in Central Ohio. In January 2020 we signed up to work with an amazing organization called Choice Network and have recently been moved to their active list of prospective adoptive parents.
While the profits of Hey Bug Ceramics will directly help us fund our adoption process, we cannot do it alone and appreciate any additional donations through crowdfunding.
We hope you join us in listening to adoptee and birth family voices throughout our adoption process and forever. We are so excited to welcome not only a child, but their birth family into our own.
