After a 20 year battle with stage 4 endometriosis and adenomyosis and only two years into our marriage, Kristina had to have her sixth surgery in 5 years, a radical hysterectomy, ending our hope for biological children together.
We spent the next year and a half healing, mentally and physically. We just enjoyed life together with Lizzie and went to Disney World!
Then 2020 happened. Bobby found himself out of work and really needing a change of pace. Lizzie was home from school due to Covid-19. So, Bobby jumped into being a full-time dad and homeschool teacher without hesitation. Six months into the pandemic, Bobby suggested that adoption should be the next step to complete our family. I whole-heartedly agreed! We were overjoyed to begin this journey together!
Adoption is near and dear to Bobby’s heart as he was adopted at 6 months of age from foster care. It was a closed adoption, so Bobby had little knowledge of his biological family. As we began to go through the adoption process ourselves, it gave us an opportunity to reflect on his own personal experience. For Christmas, Kristina bought Bobby an Ancestry DNA test hoping he may find out his nationality and maybe that might help him fill in some of the holes in his family history. While we waited for the results, we completed our home study and adoption education. We were discussing what we wanted in our own adoption when the results came in.
Bobby found his birth family! He dove headfirst into contacting his DNA matches and absorbing their stories. At the age of 40, Bobby saw a picture of his mother for the very first time. Sadly, we learned that she passed away in 2018 but have made contact with his half sister and half brother. We met Bobby’s biological father and his other children: a half-brother and half-sister. We feel so blessed to get to know them and hope to continue contact and build new traditions together!
Less than a month since we found Bobby's birth family, we learned from our consultant that we matched with a baby boy! We couldn't be more thrilled! We are grateful for the opportunity to raise another child together and look forward to building a bond with the family that chooses us to parent their child.
