are adopting a child from Colombia

Last summer, we had the wonderful opportunity to host an amazing teen from Colombia in our home for two weeks. But, unlike most foreign exchange students, this program was specifically for orphaned teens in foster care. The purpose was to allow these older children the opportunity to visit the United States and experience life in a loving family–and of course, to help them find a permanent family!

Our guest spent two weeks with us where he had the opportunity to experience life on a rural farm in the United States. For someone who grew up in a big city, the countryside was a marvel. He loved to help feed and take care of the animals, garden, and play futbol (soccer) in the backyard. He was amazed that we had grass to play on instead of cement! One of the highlights was sleeping out under the stars in the backyard. He told us that it was the first time he had ever slept outside!

We didn't know what to expect when we accepted the invitation to host an orphaned teen, but after setting aside our fears and following God's gentle nudging, we proceeded to make the necessary arrangements. We are so very glad we did. This young man was a kind, helpful, gentle soul that fit well into our family. I wish we were allowed to show you his face in the pictures! When he left, we couldn't wait to let the adoption agency know that we wanted to keep him! In Colombia, foster children are released on their own when they turn 16, and we wanted to make sure that this didn't happen to this young man.

Part of the adoption requirements are that the family goes to Colombia for an extended stay (4-6 weeks) in order to finalize the adoption and immigration paperwork. We have used our own savings so far to cover all the adoption fees, but still need to finance our trip to pick him up. We would be so appreciative of any help you can provide with this life-saving endeavor!
