So after a year of having guardianship of this wonderful boy, my husband and I have decided to take the leap and want to officially make him our son.
June 10, 2022 I got a frantic call from my younger brother, whom I had custody of at the time. His best friend (who was practically always at our house), was stranded an hour and a half away for our home town. He had been staying with a friend- the friend kicked him out. I was at work, forty-five minutes away from home- three hours from where my brother's friend was.
I hung up on my brother and called his best friend. All I needed was to hear was his voice to know that I was driving three hours to pick up the fifteen year old, who would soon become my son.
From April 2022 until late July 2022, we had no contact with his mother. A week before school starts she texted him telling him he needed to come home. At the time my husband had just returned home from a three year tour over seas- he and our boy clicked instantly- the thought we were going to loose our boy tore us apart. Then CPS got involved.
His mother was an abusive drunk. His dad was nonexistent. There were countless police reports and numerous calls into our local CPS office regarding his home situation. At fifteen he had only attended five days of his freshman year. He maintained a 0.0 GPA and had 0 credits.
August 1, 2022 we were given legal guardianship. He now has 8 credits, a 1.79 GPA and is in the schools NJROTC. He maintains passing grades, and has only missed 13 days of school total this school year. He enjoys participating in community service and going on field trips with his NJROTC unit.
We have our paperwork done, now we're just trying to save up for the home study!
